Personality:

The gap in the timeline between the Joseph of Battle Tendency and his grey-haired counterpart in Stardust Crusaders can appear difficult to navigate on the surface but it isn't too complex: when you get down to it, he hasn't really changed so much as grown up and, even then, to varying degrees. He's the eccentric rich uncle everyone wishes they had, the doting father and the effervescent trickster all in one.

Naturally, age has mellowed him out somewhat and his rougher, more immature qualities have been sanded down but he has the same glint in his eye as ever and one thing is very clear; Joseph Joestar has graduated from studying his book of tricks to authoring it. The same ability to think on the spot and pull together plans so absurd that they make even his opponents' heads spin has served him well throughout the rest of his life too- all he's had to do is switch his brain from fighting to real estate. For all the jokes thrown his way about being an old man, Joseph is astonishingly sharp and quick witted and, this time, he has the experience to back it up. All in all, Joseph's self-confidence is only occasionally misplaced. He excels at turning dire situations around, using everything at his disposable to get himself where he needs to be, even if it's just by the skin of his teeth. In fact, it's staying on that knife edge that keeps his blood pumping. Sheer brute strength alone has never won him fights and Joseph enjoys a good battle of wits, whether it's a literal battle, in a boardroom in the middle of New York or in a poker game. Unsurprisingly, he isn't afraid to play dirty either- something that both of the D'Arby brothers get a taste of. It isn't really a lack of morals driving him so much as a disregard for rules. Joseph has always done things his own way and he has no intention of stopping now he's in his sixties.

Of course, there are problems that come with that. This, along with his naturally impulsive nature, is part of what leads to him cheating on his wife of forty five years with Tomoko Higashikata. He isn't necessarily a bad person, just deeply flawed and prone to bouts of selfishness and insensitivity. As Mariah puts it, he can't help but want to do things he shouldn't and it's often at the expense of other people's feelings and, as in that specific instance, safety. Furthermore, his confidence just as easily tips over into foolhardiness, such as when Steely Dan out-barters him without him ever knowing and when he attempts to trick the eldest D'Arby brother in a game of cards. He isn't arrogant, simply used to winning or relying on the odds landing in his favour to pull through when he could be more thorough. Less seriously, his "act first, think later" approach lands him in almost as many awkward situations as it does save him, ranging from embarrassing himself to enraging a bathroom full of women in an ill-conceived plan to find a stand user. And that's not even counting his unreliable brain-to-mouth filter. Joseph is wildly expressive, never hesitating to speak his mind and lapsing into loud, explosive bouts of English- idk what language the crusaders are speaking don't make me guess- when he's shocked or annoyed. Being the life of the party isn't always a good thing; you're just as likely to be laughed at than with.

Still, his people skills have improved significantly since his youth; it's hard not to be charmed by his roguish, good-natured personality and- against his obvious preference for being the bold leader- he often takes on a more paternal role in a group. Becoming a father has changed Joseph immeasurably; he values his family, particularly his daughter, deeply, perhaps a reaction to growing up without his own parents and, later, losing his first truly close friend in Caesar. Holly can tease him all she likes, make him run in circles and embarrass him in the middle of an airport and, though he might protest, it's half-hearted and he would do anything for her, including traveling half way across the world to dredge up old family feuds and get himself killed- and revived- in the process. For all his faults, Joseph is an excellent father to Holly and, later, grandfather to Jotaro. Where he's soft on his daughter, he's just hard enough with Jotaro to earn his trust without damaging their relationship; he's one of the people who helps him to grow and mature over the course of their journey and effortlessly commands a position of respect amongst all of the group. In particular, he has a strong bond with Abdul, who shows great loyalty and warmth towards him but is also frequently dragged out of his cool, collected shell by Joseph's antics without complaint. Together, they almost feel like the parents of the Crusaders. Having to watch them ultimately lose their lives is heart breaking. Kakyoin's final showdown with Dio, probably stirring up memories of what happened with Caesar alongside the horror of having to watch someone he's grown close to, someone who is the same age as his grandson die so brutally, shakes Joseph to his core. For all of his experience, he hasn't been numbed to suffering. Personal relationships, though sometimes fleeting and spontaneous, mean a lot to him and the friendships he forges last decades.

Similarly, it can be assumed that Joseph has a way with words in his work life too as, even putting aside his pre-existing wealth, he's extraordinarily wealthy, owning an enormous apartment in the middle of New York as well as a seemingly bottomless bank account. Not to say that he uses it well; he's always lived a cushy life and, now that he's richer than ever, you could probably say that he has more money than sense. Rather than actually working out the right price for camels and supplies, to the astonishment of everyone, he just goes out and buys a ridiculously expensive car to trade with. Additionally, he's prone to devolving into bullshit when he wants to look more knowledgeable than he is. Instead of admitting that he doesn't actually know how to ride a camel, he tries to save face by basically guessing his way through and looking pretty stupid at the end of it. For someone so laid back, he has certain sore spots and damaging his pride or implying that his age makes him weaker in any way sometimes results in a spot of sulking.

In the end, Joseph is still Joseph, just slightly wiser and gentler. He's bright and bold and utterly irreplaceable, yes, but he's gained an emotional maturity from the incident with the Pillar Men and having a family that he never possessed before. There's a new sense of stability, charm and self-assurance that's hard not to buy into and feel comforted by.

just don't get on a plane with him please god don't get on a plane with him
